Gaming Wall Street Storyline

It explores the causes that led to the 2021 GameStop short squeeze, and the dark underbelly of Wall Street that the phenomenon unearthed: payment for order flow, creative accounting, abuses of the short selling mechanism like naked short selling, corporate overvoting and failures to deliver (FTDs).

About Gaming Wall Street TV Series

The series was initiated by Prodigium Pictures, owned by director Tobias Deml, in late 2020.
Initially conceived as a documentary following the online community Wall Street Bets, the focus shifted to meme stocks and the financial market phenomena after the GameStop event became a global headline.
Filming began on February 1, 2021, in Nevada, and the production team stayed out of the public eye to avoid publicity due to other documentaries being announced on the subject.
Prodigium partnered with Biltmore Films, who had produced Betting on Zero earlier, with Burke Koonce and John Fichthorn helping elevate the documentary into an investigative analysis of financial systems exposed by the GameStop movement.
The project secured the support of Biltmore’s previous distributor, Gunpowder and Sky, before being pitched to HBO Max, who green-lit a two-episode structure in fall 2021.
The series was edited in secrecy on a highly compressed timeline of 3.5 months, with a team of six editors and a globally distributed animation team.
Filming concluded during post-production in early January 2022.
The series was announced with a trailer on February 26, 2022, and released on March 3, 2022.
Director Tobias Deml emphasized the need for financial literacy and education about investing, aiming to address issues created by powerful firms manipulating the system to society’s detriment.
Deml hopes the series empowers viewers to see themselves as investors and drive reform in the financial system.
