Storyline
The film will follow an idealistic young politician who juggles familial issues and a challenging work life while preparing to take over the job of her mentor, the state’s longtime incumbent governor.

Ella McCay is an upcoming American comedy-drama film written directed, and co-produced by James L. Brooks. The film features Emma Mackey in the lead role, alongside a supporting cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edebiri, Kumail Nanjiani, Jack Lowden, Rebecca Hall, Spike Fearn, Troy Garity, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Albert Brooks.
In November 2023, it was announced that James L. Brooks would write and direct his first film in thirteen years, following How Do You Know (2010), with 20th Century Studios set to distribute.
The cast includes one Oscar winner: Jamie Lee Curtis, and three Oscar nominees: Woody Harrelson, Albert Brooks, and Kumail Nanjiani.
Filming began in Rhode Island on February 1, 2024. Production officially wrapped on May 3, but as of January 2025, additional scenes were scheduled to be filmed in Rhode Island in March. The film was also expected to shoot in Cleveland and New Orleans that same month.
