Early Life and Education
Kim Ji-soo was born on January 3, 1995, in Gunpo, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. She grew up in a close-knit family with her parents, an older brother, and an older sister. As a child, Jisoo was active in sports, enjoying basketball and practicing taekwondo. She initially aspired to become a painter and writer and was a devoted fan of the K-pop boy group TVXQ.
Jisoo attended the School of Performing Arts Seoul, where she discovered her passion for entertainment. In her 11th grade, she joined the school’s drama club, which fueled her interest in acting and gave her early exposure to the industry through auditions. Before her debut, she lived with her family, including her grandparents. In addition to her native Korean, she learned to speak Chinese and Japanese.
In 2011, Jisoo took a significant step toward her career in the entertainment industry by joining YG Entertainment as a trainee after passing its auditions. Her early appearances included starring in Epik High’s 2014 music video for Spoiler + Happen Ending, portraying a heartbroken girl. That same year, she played Bobby’s girlfriend in Hi Suhyun’s I’m Different music video. In 2015, she made her acting debut with a cameo in the KBS2 drama The Producers, alongside labelmates Sandara Park of 2NE1 and Kang Seung-yoon of WINNER.
Career
Jisoo made her debut as a member of BLACKPINK on August 8, 2016, alongside Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group’s debut single album, Square One, featured the chart-topping hit Whistle and the energetic Boombayah. In 2018, BLACKPINK expanded their global reach by signing with Interscope Records in partnership with YG Entertainment.

Between 2017 and 2018, Jisoo showcased her hosting skills as an MC on Inkigayo, alongside GOT7’s Jinyoung and NCT’s Doyoung. She took her first step into acting in 2019 with a brief cameo in the tvN fantasy drama Arthdal Chronicles, playing Song Joong-ki’s love interest. In June 2020, her fashion and makeup choices in the teasers for BLACKPINK’s How You Like That went viral, inspiring trends across South Korea, China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Notably, her self-created “two-bow hairstyle” and “dot style” makeup sparked a social media craze.
Jisoo also contributed creatively to BLACKPINK’s music, co-writing Lovesick Girls from the group’s first studio album, The Album (2020). She later co-wrote Yeah Yeah Yeah, a track from BLACKPINK’s second studio album, Born Pink (2022).
In 2021, Jisoo landed her first leading role as Eun Yeong-ro in the JTBC drama Snowdrop, directed by Sky Castle‘s Yoo Hyun-mi and Jo Hyun-tak. The series, which featured Jung Hae-in as her love interest, gained international popularity, ranking number one on Disney+ in four of the five countries it was released in, including South Korea. For her performance, Jisoo received the Outstanding Korean Actress award at the Seoul International Drama Awards in September 2022.
On January 2, 2023, YG Entertainment confirmed that Jisoo would be making her solo debut within the year. By February 21, her label revealed that filming for her music video was underway in a high-budget overseas location, marking the most expensive BLACKPINK-related production to date. Her highly anticipated single album, Me, was officially released on March 31, 2023, featuring the lead single Flower and the B-side track All Eyes on Me.
Me made history by debuting at number one on the Circle Album Chart, selling 1.03 million copies in its first week—the first K-pop female solo album to surpass the million-sales milestone. The lead single Flower was a massive hit, peaking at number two on the Circle Digital Chart and staying in the top ten for 12 weeks. Internationally, it debuted at number two on the Billboard Global 200, achieving the third-largest streaming start for a debut track in the chart’s history. It also became the highest-charting song by a Korean female soloist on the Canadian Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. Jisoo actively promoted Flower, performing on Inkigayo and securing nine music show wins, including Triple Crowns on Inkigayo and Show Champion. She later performed the song at BLACKPINK’s headlining sets at Coachella in April and BST Hyde Park in July.
Jisoo continued her acting career with a special cameo in the fantasy film Dr. Cheon and Lost Talisman, released on September 27, 2023. She was later cast as the lead in Coupang Play’s upcoming thriller drama Newtopia, a zombie outbreak series written by Parasite co-writer Han Jin-won and directed by Yoon Seong-hyun. Additionally, she is set to make her feature film debut in the highly anticipated adaptation of the webtoon Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, starring as Lee Ji-hye alongside Lee Min-ho. Filming for the project was scheduled to begin in December 2024.
On November 22, 2023, Jisoo and her BLACKPINK bandmates were honored by King Charles III as Honorary Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) during a special investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace, attended by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. The following month, YG Entertainment announced on December 5 that BLACKPINK had renewed their contracts for group activities, while individual contracts were still under discussion. By December 29, it was confirmed that Jisoo and her fellow members chose not to sign individual contracts with YG Entertainment.
Venturing into a new chapter, Jisoo established her independent label, Blissoo, on February 21, 2024. On January 28, 2025, she signed a global deal with Warner Records for her solo career. She is set to release her first EP, Amortage, on February 14, 2025, marking a new era in her musical journey.
Impact
Jisoo has consistently ranked among the most influential K-pop idols. In Gallup Korea’s annual surveys, she was the 10th most popular idol in 2018 and ranked 17th in 2019. That same year, she was the sixth most popular female K-pop idol in a survey of South Korean soldiers. She also made history as one of only two Korean singers featured on the BoF 500 list, which recognizes individuals shaping the global fashion industry.
Her influence extends to social media, where she was recognized by Time in December 2022 as the most-followed Korean actress on Instagram, boasting over 66 million followers at the time. As of October 2024, she remains the fourth most-followed K-pop idol, trailing only her BLACKPINK bandmates Lisa, Jennie, and Rosé, with 79.5 million followers.
Jisoo has been a major force in the beauty industry. In 2020, she was ranked among the top ten global celebrities and influencers driving the cosmetics industry, according to Women’s Wear Daily. She led in average engagement per post, surpassing industry giants like Rihanna and Kylie Jenner, and was the only East Asian on the list. Additionally, she topped Korea’s personal brand reputation rankings, which analyze brand impact and consumer interest. Her influence was so significant that language expert Seong-sun Lim cited her and BTS’s Jungkook as new global beauty standards, replacing traditional Western icons like Olivia Hussey and James Dean.
As Dior’s global ambassador, Jisoo has played a pivotal role in the brand’s success, with her campaigns contributing to a surge in sales in South Korea during the COVID-19 pandemic. She appeared in promotions for Dior’s Bobby bag and was a key figure at its Spring/Summer 2021 collection showcase, where her presence generated the brand’s highest-rated social media post. Dior’s creative director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, even revealed that the Autumn/Winter 2021 collection was inspired by Jisoo. Additionally, a shade of Dior Addict Lip Glow, 025 Seoul Scarlet, was named in honor of Korean women like her.
Her appearances at Paris Fashion Week have further cemented her status as a fashion powerhouse. During the Spring/Summer 2022 collection show, she generated the highest media impact value (MIV) of any public figure, with her four Instagram posts valued at $1.84 million. She also accounted for $15.7 million of Dior’s total $39.1 million MIV with just two posts. At the Autumn/Winter 2022 show, a single Instagram photo of her was valued at $1.74 million, making it the most impactful social media post of the event.
Beyond music and fashion, Jisoo has also influenced the gaming industry. In March 2021, her collaboration with KartRider Rush+ helped boost the game’s ranking to 11th place, receiving positive feedback from users.
With her immense global reach across multiple industries, Jisoo continues to redefine influence in music, fashion, beauty, and beyond.
Philanthropy
On January 3, 2023, her 28th birthday, Jisoo created her personal YouTube channel named ‘Happy Jisoo 103%’. She expressed that the proceeds from her newly established channel will be donated to charity. On March 12, 2024, it was revealed that the charity of choice was Save the Children.
Personal Life
On August 3, 2023, Jisoo and actor Ahn Bo-hyun publicly confirmed their relationship, with both of their agencies stating that they were “getting to know each other with good feelings” and asking for fans’ support. However, their romance was short-lived, as YG Entertainment announced their breakup on October 24, 2023. The split was reportedly due to their demanding schedules, making it difficult to sustain their relationship. Despite going their separate ways, they remained on good terms.
As of early February 2025, Jisoo is single and remains focused on her music career, continuing to make strides as a solo artist.
