About Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo Movie

Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo (AVPL) is a Telugu action drama film written and directed by Trivikram Srinivas. Produced by Allu Aravind and S. Radha Krishna under Geetha Arts and Haarika & Hassine Creations, the film stars Allu Arjun and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles, supported by Jayaram, Tabu, Sushanth, Nivetha Pethuraj, Murali Sharma, Sachin Khedekar, Samuthirakani, Navdeep, Sunil, Harsha Vardhan, and Govind Padmasoorya.

Following Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018), Trivikram planned a film with Allu Arjun, who suggested script changes. The concept of infant-swapping had previously been explored in Inti Guttu (1958). Officially announced on 31 December 2018, the film marked the third collaboration between Trivikram and Allu Arjun after Julayi (2012) and S/O Satyamurthy (2015). The tentative title #AA19 was later revealed as Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo on 15 August 2019.

Initially, Kiara Advani was considered for the female lead, but Pooja Hegde later replaced her. Sunil, Nivetha Pethuraj, Tabu, and Sushanth joined in significant roles. Production began with a pooja ceremony on 13 April 2019 at Geetha Arts, with filming commencing on 24 April. The second schedule started on 5 June in Hyderabad, and in October, the team traveled to France to shoot the song Samajavaragamana at Mont-Saint-Michel, the Eiffel Tower, and Lido de Paris, marking a first for South Indian cinema. The song cost ₹5 crore (US$570,000) to film. Additional songs, including OMG Daddy and Butta Bomma, were shot in Europe and Hyderabad. Filming concluded on 28 December 2019.

Promotions began with a title reveal on 15 August 2019, followed by a first-look poster on 1 September. Additional posters and teasers were released for Dusshera, birthdays of lead actors, and Trivikram’s birthday. The official teaser launched on 11 December 2019. A grand promotional event, the AVPL Musical Concert, was held at Yousufguda Police Grounds on 6 January 2020, featuring the film’s audio launch and trailer.

Following the film’s success, a Tamil-dubbed version, Vaikundapuram, was released instead of a remake. In Bollywood, Shehzada (2023) starred Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles, directed by Rohit Dhawan and produced by Radha Krishna. Filming for Shehzada commenced in October 2021 and concluded in January 2023, with the movie releasing on 17 February 2023.

Producer Radha Krishna announced on 10 July 2019 that the film would release during Sankranthi. On 12 October 2019, the makers confirmed a 12 January 2020 release, clashing with Sarileru Neekevvaru. Rumors in December suggested an earlier release on 10 January, but on 4 January 2020, the Active Telugu Film Producers Guild confirmed the original release date. The film premiered at IMAX Melbourne, one of the world’s largest cinema theaters, and had its U.S. release on 11 January 2020, a day before its Indian debut. It was also released in Malayalam as Angu Vaikuntapurathu, while the Tamil dubbed version Vaikundapuram followed in 2020.

The film’s satellite and digital rights were acquired by Gemini TV. Its digital premiere occurred on Sun NXT and Netflix on 27 February 2020, after 49 days in theaters, with the Malayalam version arriving on Netflix on 4 March 2020. The world television premiere aired on 16 August 2020 via Gemini TV and Gemini Movies, while the Tamil version premiered on Sun TV. The Telugu version achieved a record-breaking TRP of 29.4, the highest for a Telugu film. The Hindi dubbed version aired on 13 February 2022 on Dhinchaak TV (now Goldmines).
