Early Life & Education

Raju Lama was born on March 16, 1978, in Baruwa 1, Sindhupalchok, to parents Sukhbir Lama and Yangchun Lama. At the age of five, he moved to Kathmandu with his sister, where he began his early education. He later completed his School Leaving Certificate (SLC) at Siddhartha Vanasthali School.
Career
Raju Lama’s musical journey began in his early years when he started singing during primary school, despite not having access to musical instruments. His passion for music was ignited after watching a television show at a friend’s house, where he memorized lyrics and refined his skills through self-practice.

Inspired by legendary artists like the late Arun Thapa and Aruna Lama, Raju Lama’s talent quickly gained recognition. Encouraged by a teacher, he briefly attended music classes at Sadhana Kala Kendra but had to discontinue after a month due to academic commitments.
In 1992, during his final school years, he co-founded the Mongolian Heart Band with his classmates, driven by their shared love for music. The band made its commercial debut in 1993, with Raju Lama as the lead vocalist. At just 14 years old, their first album, Soltini (1994), brought them into the limelight.
Though he briefly considered alternative career paths, such as joining the British Army or pursuing a technical profession, his dedication to music kept him on a different course. The band’s second album, Mongolian Heart (1997), further established their reputation and gained widespread acclaim.
Raju Lama’s music has taken him across the globe, with performances in countries like the USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Dubai, solidifying his status as a celebrated artist.
Acknowledging his sister Lhamu Lama’s pivotal role in his journey, Raju attributes much of his success, recognition, and identity to her unwavering support since childhood. Her nurturing guidance from his formative years has been instrumental in shaping his artistic evolution.
