Early Life & Education

Sajjan Raj Vaidya was born on September 10, 1993, and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. Introduced to music by his family, he credits them for shaping his musical journey, stating, “My story with music began with my family. My mother taught me how to sing, my father taught us to listen to music in all its forms, and my brother taught me to evolve with music. So any style or influence I have is constituted by parts of what I learned from my family. My continuity in music comes from my sheer love for it.”
Vaidya drew inspiration from a diverse range of genres, with influences including The Eagles, UB40, Linkin Park, and Karna Das. He began performing live during his school years and later started sharing his music through Facebook, marking the beginning of his journey as an independent artist.
Career
Vaidya made his major debut with the release of Aaja Matra in 2014, followed by Hawaijahaj in 2016, which became his breakthrough hit. The music video for Hawaijahaj was produced by Fuzz Factory Productions, further elevating his presence in the Nepali music scene. In 2018, he (re)released Mooskaan and Anountho Mutu, continuing to build his discography.
On January 1, 2019, Vaidya released Hataarindai, Bataasindai, a song that gained significant attention for its inclusive storytelling. The music video featured both a straight and a gay couple, including a rare depiction of same-sex affection in Nepali media. Through this release, Vaidya became one of the few Nepali artists to openly represent the LGBTQ community.
Reflecting on the video’s concept, he shared, “When I wrote Hataarindai, Bataasindai, it was independent of the video concept. We decided that the underrepresentation of the LGBTQ community in Nepal was an important issue that needed to be addressed, and that is how the video came about.”
The song resonated deeply with Nepal’s LGBTQ community and was later embraced as an anthem, even being featured during Nepal’s first pride parade in July 2019.
Katha
Katha is a video series started by Vaidya in 2018. The series debuted in the artist’s YouTube channel. The video series features a live, acoustic rendition of a song published by the artist or other artists, and also includes a section discussing the origin and the composition process of the song.
