Who is Sabrina Carpenter?
Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She rose to fame with her role in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World (2014–2017) and signed with Hollywood Records. She debuted with the single Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying (2014) and went on to release several albums, including Eyes Wide Open (2015), Evolution (2016), Singular: Act I (2018), and Singular: Act II (2019).
In 2021, Carpenter transitioned to Island Records, where she released her fifth studio album, Emails I Can’t Send (2022). Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter was born on May 11, 1999, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, to David and Elizabeth Carpenter and was raised in East Greenville. She grew up with three older sisters and was homeschooled. She is also the niece of actress Nancy Cartwright.
Carpenter developed a love for music at a young age, sharing covers of songs by Christina Aguilera and Adele on YouTube when she was around 10. Recognizing her passion, her father built a recording studio at home to support her musical aspirations. In 2009, she competed in The Next Miley Cyrus Project, a singing contest hosted by Miley Cyrus, where she secured third place.
Career
Sabrina Carpenter made her acting debut in 2011 with a guest role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Around the same time, she performed Something’s Got a Hold on Me at China’s Gold Mango Audience Festival. In 2012, she landed a recurring role in the Fox sitcom The Goodwin Games and appeared in the film Horns (2013). She also recorded Smile for the Disney Fairies soundtrack, which gained airplay on Radio Disney. Additionally, she voiced Princess Vivian in Sofia the First and performed All You Need alongside Ariel Winter.
In 2013, Carpenter was cast as Maya Hart in Girl Meets World, a Disney Channel spin-off of Boy Meets World. Running for 72 episodes until 2017, the show boosted her career, and she also recorded the theme song with co-star Rowan Blanchard. Before 2014, she signed a five-album deal with Disney’s Hollywood Records.
Carpenter launched her music career in 2014 with her debut single Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying, co-written by Meghan Trainor, receiving positive reviews. The song became the title track of her debut EP, released in April. The album was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year, winning the former, while Espresso won Best Pop Solo Performance. A third single, Taste, was released alongside the album and debuted at number two on the Hot 100, making Carpenter the first artist since The Beatles to chart their first three top-five hits in the US in the same week. The three singles remained in the Hot 100 top ten for seven consecutive weeks, setting a record for a female artist. Additionally, Carpenter became the first artist in 71 years to spend 20 weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart, with Taste becoming the longest-running UK number-one of 2024. In September 2024, Carpenter appeared on Christina Aguilera’s Spotify-exclusive special for the 25th anniversary of Aguilera’s debut album, duetting on What a Girl Wants. That same month, she embarked on her first arena tour, the Short n’ Sweet Tour. Sabrina Carpenter has cited R&B as a genre that often influences her music. She considers Christina Aguilera and Rihanna as her biggest musical inspirations, crediting Aguilera’s 2002 song Beautiful for helping her develop her vocal style. Carpenter has also named Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Etta James as early influences, while Beyoncé has inspired her with genre-bending artistry.
