Storyline:
An animated musical film revolving around the iconic creations of Peyo.
About The Smurfs Movie:
Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies had previously attempted to develop an animated Smurfs film with producer Jordan Kerner in the 2000s, but Sony Pictures Animation eventually acquired the film rights, producing a live-action/CGI hybrid film in 2011, a sequel in 2013, and the fully animated Smurfs: The Lost Village in 2017.
In February 2022, LAFIG Belgium and IMPS (now Peyo Company), owners of the Smurfs brand, partnered with Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies to produce multiple animated Smurfs films, starting with a musical. Pam Brady was attached to write the screenplay, with production starting later that year. In June 2022, Chris Miller, a former DreamWorks Animation veteran, was hired as the film’s director.
In April 2023, Rihanna joined the cast as Smurfette, also serving as a producer and contributing original songs. Initially titled The Smurfs Movie, the film was later renamed The Smurfs Musical and then reverted to The Smurfs Movie during CinemaCon in April 2024. Matt Landon was announced as co-director.
At CinemaCon in April 2024, additional cast members were revealed, including Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman.
The animation services are being provided by Cinesite, with the film’s animation style heavily influenced by Peyo’s original comics, incorporating action lines, comic thought bubbles, and a buoyant style with plenty of squash and stretch.
