Storyline:
The film is based on true events that unfolded in 1975. The chronicles incidents that took place under the leadership of Mrs Indira Gandhi, one of the most Powerful Women in Indian History.
About Emergency Movie:
Emergency is a Hindi historical biographical political drama film directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, featuring a screenplay by Ritesh Shah and a story penned by Ranaut. The film serves as Ranaut’s official directorial debut, following her earlier experience as a co-director on Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2018).
The film, centered on the Indian Emergency, features Kangana Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. To enhance her portrayal, Ranaut wears a prosthetic nose, adding authenticity to her character. The time period depicted in the film is often referred to by political historians as the “darkest chapter of Indian democracy.”
This marks the second time Kangana Ranaut is portraying a female politician. She previously starred as Jayalalithaa in Thalaivii (2021), earning widespread critical acclaim for her performance.
Principal photography for Emergency began in July 2022 and concluded in January 2023. Emergency marks the final film appearance of veteran actor Satish Kaushik, who passed away from a heart attack in Gurugram on March 9, 2023, at the age of 66.
Vishak Nair, who portrays Sanjay Gandhi in Emergency, shared his experience of working with Kangana Ranaut, stating, “It felt as if Indira Gandhi herself was directing us. My admiration for Kangana grew as I learned more about her filmmaking skills. Directing, producing, and acting in a movie is no easy feat, but she handles it like a true professional.”
Kangana Ranaut revealed that she had to mortgage her house to fund Emergency. In an interview, the National Award-winning actress admitted, “My film was halted. I financed it by mortgaging my house and jewellery.”
Emergency Release Date:
Emergency was initially scheduled for release on September 6, 2024, but was postponed due to delays in obtaining certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). After receiving clearance, the film was released on January 17, 2025. However, it garnered negative reviews upon its release.
Emergency collected ₹2.25 crore on its opening day.
