About Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Movie:
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning serves as a direct sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023) and is the eighth installment in the Mission: Impossible film series.
On January 14, 2019, Tom Cruise announced that the seventh and eighth films would be filmed consecutively, with Christopher McQuarrie writing and directing both. The original release dates were set for July 23, 2021, and August 5, 2022.
However, by February 2021, Deadline Hollywood reported that the two films would no longer be shot back-to-back. By November of that year, McQuarrie was in the process of rewriting The Final Reckoning. Principal photography for the film began on March 23, 2022, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Filming locations included Longcross Studios and the Lake District in the UK, as well as Malta, South Africa, and Norway. During the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, it was believed that production was on hold, based on an interview with McQuarrie in the June 2023 issue of Empire magazine. However, this was later clarified; production was merely awaiting the completion of promotions for Part One. Filming officially paused in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
In July 2024, Simon Pegg revealed via Instagram that his part in the filming was complete, though the cast and crew maintained radio silence. By November 2024, Cruise and Paramount confirmed that the film had wrapped production and was in post-production.
In October 2023, the subtitle Dead Reckoning Part Two was removed, with the new subtitle The Final Reckoning being confirmed in November 2024.
Despite the title change, in June 2023, McQuarrie told Fandango that Dead Reckoning and The Final Reckoning might not mark the end of the series, as they were exploring ideas for future films. Cruise also expressed interest in continuing his role as Ethan Hunt during the promotion of Dead Reckoning in July 2023.
On November 12, 2024, insider Jeff Sneider reported that Cruise was considering his Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell to take over as the lead in the future.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Release Date:
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is slated for release on May 23, 2025. It was initially scheduled for August 5, 2022, but faced several delays, eventually landing on its current date due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which shifted the original release date of The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.
