About Young Woman and the Sea Movie:
In November 2015, Jerry Bruckheimer acquired the rights to Glenn Stout’s 2009 non-fiction book Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World for Paramount Pictures. Jeff Nathanson was hired to write the script, and Lily James was initially cast as Gertrude Ederle. However, the project experienced delays and eventually entered development hell. By December 2020, Walt Disney Pictures picked up the film after Paramount put it in turnaround, with plans for a Disney+ release. Jerry Bruckheimer oversaw production under his Jerry Bruckheimer Films banner, with Chad Oman managing production for Disney.
The film received support from several international organizations and tax incentives, including the British Film Commission, the UK Government’s Film Tax Relief, France’s Tax Rebate for International Production, Bulgaria’s Executive Agency National Film Center, and Canada’s Film or Video Production Services Tax Credit in Quebec.
With the project’s revival in 2020, Daisy Ridley replaced Lily James as Gertrude Ederle. In March 2022, Tilda Cobham-Hervey joined the cast as Margaret Ederle, with Stephen Graham and Christopher Eccleston added in undisclosed roles. Principal photography began in early May 2022 and concluded on June 18, 2022. Ridley trained extensively in swimming under the guidance of Olympic swimmer turned coach Siobhan-Marie O’Connor to prepare for the role.
First-look images of the film were revealed by People magazine on March 6, 2024. The trailer premiered at CinemaCon on April 11, 2024, before being released online. The film had its world premiere on May 16, 2024, in Los Angeles.
Young Woman and the Sea Release Date:
Initially planned as a direct-to-streaming release on Disney+, Young Woman and the Sea underwent a strategic shift after positive test screenings and the success of Amazon MGM Studios’ sports drama The Boys in the Boat (2023). With the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in France serving as a thematic tie-in, Disney opted for a limited theatrical release starting May 31, 2024, in the United States, United Kingdom, and China. The film was subsequently released on Disney+ worldwide on July 19, 2024.
