About Weapons Movie
Weapons is an upcoming American horror mystery film starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Austin Abrams, Amy Madigan, and June Diane Raphael. The film is written, directed, and co-produced by Zach Cregger.
In January 2023, Weapons, written on spec by Zach Cregger prompted a bidding war between Netflix, Universal Pictures, TriStar Pictures, and New Line Cinema. Later that month, Deadline Hollywood reported that New Line Cinema won the rights to the film.
Netflix was ready to pay more money upfront than New Line, but an assured theatrical release and New Line’s track record with horror were the better selling points.
Deadline reported that the deal was sold to New Line for $38 million. This included the budget for the film, with Cregger receiving $5 million to direct and a total of $10 million when added to his fees for scripting and producing alongside Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, as well as J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules.
Rooney Mara and Elizabeth Olsen were initially offered the lead role but both declined. Pedro Pascal and Renate Reinsve were subsequently cast, but they had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Pascal dropped out to star in The Fantastic Four (2025), in which Julia Garner also had a role.
Principal photography was scheduled to begin in Atlanta in May 2024.
