Storyline

A man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is “don’t live here, don’t surf here.” Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point.

About The Surfer Movie

The Surfer is an Australian and Irish co-production psychological thriller film directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, and Justin Rosniak.

Nicolas Cage’s involvement in the film was confirmed in May 2023. In October and November 2023, reports emerged that he was filming scenes in Yallingup. Principal photography ended in December 2023.

The Surfer premiered in the Midnight Screenings section at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on 18 May 2024 and received a six-minute standing ovation. The film was also featured in the Limelight section of the 54th International Film Festival Rotterdam on January 31, 2025.

It is scheduled to be theatrically released by Roadside Attractions on May 2, 2025.
