About The Strangers: Chapter 1 Movie
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is an American horror film written by Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland, and Amber Loutfi and directed by Renny Harlin. The film stars Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez.
It is the first installment of a new trilogy of standalone sequel films, where Chapter 1 will follow a similar premise to the original release, before continuing from there and expanding the story-arc for the main characters.
Though initially marketed as a reboot of the franchise, it has since been clarified that the films will take place in the same continuity as the first two installments.
Principal photography on all three films commenced in September 2022 in Bratislava, Slovakia, and was completed in November 2022.
Sequels
Two sequels were filmed concurrently with Chapter 1, with director Renny Harlin clarifying that the films are neither remakes nor reboots but instead aim to recapture the tone of the original story. In an interview, Harlin explained, “We shot them simultaneously and out of sequence, as is typical in filmmaking. However, we treated them as one cohesive story arc. It’s essentially a 4.5-hour movie, with the first film serving as the first act. It introduces the characters, the terror, the killers, and our main protagonist, who survives the first film but embarks on a journey that continues across the next two.”
Harlin also revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 take the narrative in new directions. The sequels will follow the character played by Madelaine Petsch over four intense days after the events of her initial encounter, exploring how the story and her journey evolve.
