About The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma Movie

The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma, also known as simply Pepsi Paloma for the domestic release, is a Philippine biographical crime drama film written and directed by Darryl Yap. It stars Rhed Bustamante, Mon Confiado, Gina Alajar, Andres Balano Jr. and Shamaine Buencamino.

This is the first film directed by Darryl Yap not to be produced by Viva Films head Vic del Rosario.

Director Darryl Yap gained interest in making a film about the life story of the deceased Pepsi Paloma because they have the same hometown and he announced it on October 28, 2024.

The film was revealed when director Darryl Yap posted in his social media account a teaser poster of the film together with the cast and a teaser trailer on January 1, 2025.

Because of the controversies of the director and his film some cinemas in the Philippines didn’t allow the word “Rapist” in the title of the film, Darry Yap changed the title of the film The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma to Pepsi Paloma for the Philippine release and the original title will still be used for international release.

Lawsuit

On January 9, 2025, the Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court granted Vic Sotto’s petition and issued a writ of habeas data, mandating the censorship of specific portions of the promotional teaser trailer for Pepsi Paloma. The court also required filmmaker Darryl Yap to submit a formal response. This legal action came after allegations that Yap’s statements in the teaser trailer sparked widespread attention and controversy on social media.

In an interview on Cristy FerMinute, attorney Enrique “Buko” V. Dela Cruz, Jr. disclosed that Sotto’s young daughter, Talitha “Tali” Maria Luna, had been subjected to school bullying due to the alleged defamatory content in Yap’s teaser. The situation escalated when Vic Sotto, along with his legal counsel, filed multiple complaints against Yap in the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court.

According to a report from TV5, Yap is now facing 19 counts of cyberlibel under Section 4 of Republic Act No. 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The complaints also seek damages amounting to ₱35 million, reflecting the seriousness of the claims surrounding the issue.
