About RRR Movie

RRR (subtitled onscreen as Roudram Ranam Rudhiram) is a Telugu epic historical action drama film directed by S. S. Rajamouli, who co-wrote the script with V. Vijayendra Prasad. Produced by D. V. V. Danayya under DVV Entertainment, the film stars N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan as fictionalized versions of Indian revolutionaries Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju. It also features Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, and Olivia Morris in supporting roles, marking their Telugu film debuts.

Rajamouli conceptualized the film by reimagining the lives of Sitarama Raju and Bheem, envisioning their meeting in 1920 Delhi as two formidable forces uniting to battle British colonial rule. The film was officially announced in March 2018, and principal photography began in November 2018 in Hyderabad. The production faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concluded in August 2021.

RRR was shot extensively across India, with additional sequences filmed in Ukraine and Bulgaria. The film’s music was composed by M. M. Keeravani, with cinematography by K. K. Senthil Kumar and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad. Sabu Cyril served as the production designer, and V. Srinivas Mohan supervised the visual effects.

Made on a budget of ₹550 crore, RRR was the most expensive Indian film at the time of its release. It was theatrically released on 25 March 2022 and became the first Indian film to be released in Dolby Cinema format. The film received universal critical acclaim for its direction, screenwriting, performances, cinematography, soundtrack, action sequences, and visual effects.

RRR had its special premieres in India and the United States on 24 March 2022, followed by a worldwide theatrical release on 25 March 2022. Initially set for 30 July 2020, the release date was postponed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with revised dates including 8 January 2021, 13 October 2021, and 7 January 2022, before settling on the final date. The film was released in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and other languages, in 2D, 3D, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema formats, making it the first Indian film released in Dolby Cinema.

A public interest litigation (PIL) was filed in the Telangana High Court, alleging historical distortion, but it was dismissed in March 2022. Additionally, ahead of the release, the Andhra Pradesh government approved a ₹75 ticket price hike for the first 10 days.

RRR became the first film screened in Jammu and Kashmir after cinemas reopened in September 2022. The original Telugu version premiered in Japan on 21 October 2022, marking the widest release for an Indian film in the country, with 209 screens and 31 IMAX screens across 44 cities. The Japanese-dubbed version followed on 28 July 2023.

Before the Academy Awards nominations, Variance Films re-released RRR in American cinemas for a limited run from 3 March 2023.
