Storyline
In 2019, the Indian Government revoked Article 370, which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir. The news impacts a cancer-ridden Pakistani army general, Qadir, who decides to exact vengeance against India and signs a contract with Jim, a former RAW agent-turned-rogue leader of “Outfit X”, a private terror organization. Jim agrees as he also wants to seek revenge against India for not trusting him as an agent during his tenure. Due to the ongoing threat, Nandini, the head of “Joint Operation and Covert Research” (JOCR) and RAW joint secretary, Colonel Sunil Luthra, summon Pathaan, an exiled field operative, to bring Jim down and destroy Outfit X. Pathaan, along with ex-ISI agent, Rubina Mohsin, begin to investigate the matter. They soon find out about Jim’s plan to spread a deadly lab-generated virus, dubbed “Raktbeej”, across India. The duo heads to apprehend Jim and stop Outfit X.
About Pathaan Movie
Pathaan is a Hindi action thriller film directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films. Written by Shridhar Raghavan and Abbas Tyrewala on the basis of an original story by Anand, it serves as the fourth installment in the YRF Spy Universe.
It stars Shah Rukh Khan in the titular role, alongside Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, and Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana in supporting roles.
Yash Raj Films, along with Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham, officially announced Pathaan on 2 March 2022 via their social media handles, unveiling the release date through a first-look teaser. Prior to this, various cast and crew members, including Salman Khan and music composer Vishal Dadlani, had teased the project. Dadlani expressed excitement on Twitter, stating, “No number from the past matters, no number in the future is too big. The whole world is waiting for Shah Rukh, more importantly, we’re all working on a kickass film with great songs.” Notably, Pathaan marked Yash Raj Films’ first Dolby Cinema release.
Casting for the film was led by Shanoo Sharma. Shah Rukh Khan was confirmed for the lead role in September 2020, followed by Deepika Padukone in November 2020. John Abraham joined the cast in June 2021, beginning his shoot in Mumbai. Dimple Kapadia was brought on board in December 2020. Additionally, Salman Khan’s cameo as Avinash Singh Rathore from the Tiger franchise was officially confirmed in November 2020.
Principal photography commenced on 17 November 2020 in Mumbai. By January 2021, the production moved to Dubai, where several high-octane action sequences, including an elaborate chase scene, were filmed. The shoot briefly halted in April 2021 due to a COVID-19 outbreak among crew members and the subsequent lockdown in Maharashtra.
Filming resumed on 25 June at Yash Raj Studios, with another schedule kicking off in July, where Padukone began her scenes. A song was initially planned to be shot in Mallorca and Cádiz from 7 October but faced delays.
In February 2022, the production team traveled to Spain to film action sequences featuring Khan, Padukone, and Abraham. Shooting took place across picturesque locations in Mallorca and Cádiz. By March 2022, the Spain schedule concluded, and the remaining portions were completed in Mumbai.
The film was shot extensively across India, Afghanistan, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Italy, France, and even at Siberia’s Lake Baikal, marking the first time an Indian film had been filmed there. Additional reshoots and scene enhancements took place in October 2022.
Pathaan’s release date was revealed on 2 March 2022 via an announcement teaser, followed by a first-look motion poster on 25 June 2022. The film’s teaser premiered on 2 November 2022, coinciding with Shah Rukh Khan’s 57th birthday, while the official trailer dropped on 10 January 2023.
On 14 January 2023, the trailer was also showcased on Dubai’s Burj Khalifa. Unlike conventional Bollywood promotions, Pathaan opted for a restrained pre-release campaign, with minimal media interactions and no public events.
As confirmed by the production head, Pathaan 2 will serve as a direct lead-up to Tiger vs Pathaan. It will be the eighth installment in the shared YRF Spy Universe and a sequel to Pathaan, with Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone reprising their roles. The film is set to commence production by the end of 2024 and is slated for a 2026 release. However, unlike its predecessor, Pathaan 2 will proceed without director Siddharth Anand at the helm.
Speculation about a standalone film featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan had been circulating since 2021, and Salman Khan confirmed these rumors in December of that year. On 6 April 2023, Tiger vs Pathaan was officially announced as the ninth installment in the YRF Spy Universe. The film will be directed by Siddharth Anand, marking his return to the franchise.
