About Map of the Soul: 7 Album
Map of the Soul: 7 is the fourth Korean-language and seventh overall studio album by South Korean boy band BTS, released on February 21, 2020, by Big Hit Entertainment. It follows their 2019 EP Map of the Soul: Persona, with five of its tracks appearing on the album. Described by BTS as “deeply personal,” the album reflects on their seven-year journey since debut. Musically, it blends pop, R&B, and hip-hop with elements of rock, trap, and EDM, while lyrically exploring themes of reflection, introspection, and self-acceptance.
The album features collaborations with Halsey on “Boy with Luv,” Ed Sheeran as a co-writer on “Make it Right,” Troye Sivan co-writing “Louder Than Bombs,” and Sia featuring on “On.” It was primarily produced by Pdogg, with contributions from Suga, Jimin, Fred Gibson, Hiss Noise, El Capitxn, Supreme Boi, and Arcades. Upon release, Map of the Soul: 7 received critical acclaim for its introspective narrative and diverse production.
The album was a massive commercial success, reaching number one in over 20 countries and becoming the world’s best-selling album of 2020. BTS became the first Asian group to top the charts in all five of the world’s biggest music markets. In the United States, it was BTS’ fourth consecutive number-one album on the Billboard 200, debuting with 422,000 album-equivalent units (including 347,000 pure sales). In just nine days, it sold over 4.1 million copies, setting a Guinness World Record for the best-selling album in South Korea. It was certified quadruple million by the Korea Music Content Association (KMCA), platinum in the United States and Japan, and gold in seven other countries.
The album spawned two singles that entered the US Billboard Hot 100: “Black Swan,” which peaked at number 57, and “On,” which reached number 4, becoming BTS’ first top-five hit on the chart. Map of the Soul: 7 won Album of the Year at the 2020 Genie Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards, Melon Music Awards, and the 46th People’s Choice Awards. “On” also won Best Pop, Best Choreography, and Best K-pop at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. BTS promoted the album through televised live performances on The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and South Korean music programs such as M Countdown, Music Bank, and Inkigayo. The band had planned a world tour, the Map of the Soul Tour, but it was ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
