Storyline
The film follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg, who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.
About Hell of a Summer Movie
Hell of a Summer was announced in July 2022, with Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk co-writing, directing, and starring in the film, marking Bryk’s directorial debut. Fred Hechinger joined the cast and also took on a producing role.
At 19 years old, Finn Wolfhard revealed to Entertainment Weekly that securing financing for the film was a challenge, as many investors were hesitant due to his age. He cited Shaun of the Dead (2004) by Edgar Wright as a key inspiration for the project.
This film marks the feature-length directorial debut for both Billy Bryk and Finn Wolfhard. Prior to this, Wolfhard directed the short film Night Shift, which starred his longtime friend and Ghostbusters co-star Bryk and premiered at TIFF 2020. The duo also co-starred in A24’s When You Finish Saving the World.
Principal photography started in July 2022 in Ontario, Canada, and wrapped up by August. By December, the film had entered the editing stage and moved into post-production by February 2023. In August 2024, Neon acquired the United States distribution rights.
