About Goosebumps TV Series
Goosebumps is an American supernatural horror television series developed by Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller for Disney+ and Hulu. It is based on the book series by R. L. Stine. The series abandons the episodic anthology format of the 1995 first television series to focus on a serialized-anthology style of storytelling instead, changing storylines from season to season instead of episode to episode while still featuring some of the existing Goosebumps monsters and items episodically.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, producers of the Goosebumps (2015) film approached director Rob Letterman with the idea of adapting the popular book series into a TV series. Enthusiastic about the opportunity, Letterman agreed and brought in his longtime collaborator, Nicholas Stoller, to help develop the series. Stoller, drawn to the horror genre and his relationship with Letterman, also signed on to the project.
On April 28, 2020, it was officially announced that Scholastic Entertainment, Sony Pictures Television, and Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film were collaborating on a live-action Goosebumps reboot for TV. This partnership followed the success of the 2015 film and its sequel. By March 2021, R.L. Stine confirmed that the series had secured a producer and a director. In February 2022, Disney+ picked up the series with a 10-episode order. Letterman returned from the 2015 film to direct the pilot, write, and serve as an executive producer, with Stoller on board as well. The series was partially developed via Zoom calls due to the pandemic’s lockdowns.
By October 2023, producers Conor Welch and Pavun Shetty expressed interest in adapting additional Goosebumps books for future seasons. Shetty specifically mentioned a desire to explore the Night of the Living Dummy series in the second season. On February 10, 2024, it was announced that the series would return for an eight-episode second season, focusing on a different cast and storyline.
In October 2022, the cast was revealed, including Justin Long, Ana Yi Puig, Miles McKenna, Will Price, Zack Morris, Isa Briones, and Rachael Harris. Rob Huebel was added in a recurring guest role in January 2023. R.L. Stine made a voice cameo in “Night of the Living Dummy Part 2” as the host of a podcast, Let the Write One In, after plans for a physical cameo were altered due to his availability. Showrunner Hilary Winston and co-executive producer James Egan pitched the podcast idea instead.
In March 2024, new cast members for season two were announced, including David Schwimmer, Ana Ortiz, Sam McCarthy, Jayden Bartels, Elijah Cooper, Galilea La Salvia, and Francesca Noel. Later in May, Arjun Athalye, Eloise Payet, Christopher Paul Richards, Kyra Tantao, Stony Blyden, and Sakina Jaffrey joined in recurring roles.
Principal photography for the series began in October 2022 in Vancouver, with filming wrapping in March 2023. Additional scenes were shot at Whistler Olympic Park in February 2023. At Letterman’s request, the production team emphasized the use of practical effects to enhance the horror elements of the show, aiming for a grounded and realistic look that would immerse audiences in the terrifying events alongside the characters.
