About Gaami Movie:

Gaami is a Telugu epic adventure thriller written and directed by debutant Vidyadhar Kagita, featuring Vishwak Sen, Chandini Chowdary, Abhinaya, Harika Pedada, and Mohammad Samad in key roles.

The film’s journey began in July 2018 when Vidyadhar Kagita initiated a crowdfunding campaign on Facebook, accompanied by a YouTube appeal that highlighted the project’s independent spirit. The campaign received overwhelming support from both the public and industry insiders, allowing principal photography to start in September 2018 in the rural landscapes of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.

Filming took place across various locations, including the Himalayas and Varanasi, which posed significant logistical challenges. The production required extensive location scouting in regions like Khtaling, Pyangong, Khardung La, Zanskar, and Leh during the winters of 2017 and 2018. From the humid villages of South India to the freezing Himalayan terrain, the crew faced diverse environmental conditions. A universally appealing title logo and character concept art were designed to reflect the film’s unique style and narrative.

The script development began in May 2016, with the first draft completed by September 2017. The breathtaking Himalayan locations heavily influenced the subsequent drafts, with the final shooting script ready by April 2018. Rewrites continued throughout production and were further refined during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Vishwak Sen and Chandini Chowdary were cast based on their previous performances, with scene tests, table reads, and rehearsals conducted before filming. Additional cast members, including Mohammad Samad and Shanti Rao, joined in later stages of production.

The art department, initially led by Vidyadhar Kagita, was later joined by Pravalya Duddupudi as the production designer. Together, they built 12 elaborate sets, including chroma key setups, at a warehouse studio. Custom props featuring mythical and retro-futuristic elements were crafted specifically for the film.

Shot over approximately 130 days, the film deviated from mainstream production practices, relying on a minimalist crew and guerrilla filmmaking techniques. The team filmed in rural villages near Nellore, on specially constructed sets in Hyderabad, and in iconic locations like the holy Ghats of Allahabad, Varanasi, Leh, and Khardung La Pass. Despite interruptions caused by the 2019 India-Pakistan border skirmishes and the COVID-19 pandemic, principal photography concluded on November 6, 2020.

Post-production began during the first COVID-19 lockdown, with the first cut finalized by November 2022. Sync Cinemas handled sound production, and Sunil Chinta supervised the visual effects, which included nearly 700 VFX shots. Motion capture tests were conducted in May 2018, and many environmental effects were achieved in-camera using innovative DIY practical systems. Speaking about the project, Vidyadhar Kagita explained, “The idea behind Gaami was to create something radical yet small enough to recover its budget even with a modest audience. It’s important to challenge the norms and create space for fresh stories in the Telugu film industry.”
