About Five Nights at Freddy’s Movie
Five Nights at Freddy’s is an American supernatural horror thriller film based on the video game series of the same name created by Scott Cawthon. Directed by Emma Tammi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback, the film stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Matthew Lillard.
The film’s working title was Bad Cupcake. Principal photography was initially set to begin in March 2021. However, due to script issues, filming was delayed. Filming began in New Orleans on February 1, 2023, and wrapped on April 3, 2023.
The teaser trailer was released on May 17, 2023, revealing the first official looks at Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy in the film.
On September 1, 2020, it was revealed that Jason Blum is using MatPat’s Five Nights at Freddy’s theory videos as research for the film. Five Nights at Freddy’s film will be Blumhouse Productions’ first-ever video game film.
On November 20, 2020, Scott Cawthon made a post on the official Five Nights at Freddy’s subreddit, where he revealed that multiple screenplays were considered, as well as explained why those screenplays were rejected.
The 2019 science-fiction comedy-horror film The Banana Splits Movie, based on the Hanna-Barbera TV show, is speculated to be a reworking of the original Five Nights at Freddy’s film Warner Bros. was supposed to work on before the rights went to Blumhouse Productions.
Five Nights at Freddy’s was released simultaneously in theaters and on Peacock in the United States by Universal Pictures on October 27, 2023, alongside After Death, Freelance, and Sight. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, but was a commercial success, grossing $294.2 million and becoming Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film worldwide, surpassing Split.
In August 2018, Cawthon said that if the first film were to be successful, there could be a second and third film, following the events of the second and third games, respectively. In January 2023, in an interview on the podcast WeeklyMTG, Lillard revealed he signed a three-picture deal with the studios.
The sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, is scheduled to be released on December 5, 2025, by Universal Pictures.
