Storyline
Mexico, today. Overqualified and exploited, lawyer Rita is wasting her talents working for a large firm far better at whitewashing criminal garbage than serving justice. But an unexpected way out appears, the sort of offers you can’t refuse : to help feared cartel boss Juan “Little Hands” Del Monte – aka Manitas – retire from his business and disappear forever. Manitas has a plan he’s been fine-tuning in secret for years : to become, at last, the woman he’s always dreamed of becoming.
About Emilia Pérez Movie
In January 2022, Télérama released a five-episode program offering an in-depth look at Jacques Audiard’s pre-production process for Emilia Pérez. Audiard developed the screenplay from what was initially intended as a four-act opera libretto. The title character was inspired by a chapter from Boris Razon’s 2018 novel Écoute. This film marks Audiard’s first solo screenwriting effort, with his frequent collaborator Thomas Bidegain contributing as a creative partner.
Clément Ducol composed the film’s original score, while both Ducol and French singer Camille worked on the original songs. Camille, who wrote the lyrics in Spanish with the help of a Mexican translator, also performed the demo versions. Damien Jalet choreographed the film’s musical sequences, and Anthony Vaccarello of Yves Saint Laurent designed the costumes.
Although production was initially set to begin in autumn 2022, it was delayed by six months due to scheduling conflicts with the cast. The film, originally slated to be shot in Mexico, was instead moved to a studio near Paris to fulfill Audiard’s vision. The studio allowed for the creation of an “authentic Mexican backdrop” for the interior scenes, giving Audiard more control over the production’s form and the sung and choreographed sequences.
Principal photography began in May 2023 in the Île-de-France region and concluded on July 5, 2023. The film was produced by Pascal Caucheteux through his company Why Not Productions, with Audiard and Valérie Schermann producing through their company Page 114, in co-production with Pathé, France 2 Cinéma, and Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent Productions.
Gascón, the director, aimed to depict Emilia Pérez both before and after her surgery.
