Storyline

From a mountain peak in South Korea, a man plummets to his death. Did he jump, or was he pushed? When detective Hae-joon arrives on the scene, he begins to suspect the dead man’s wife Seo-rae. But as he digs deeper into the investigation, he finds himself trapped in a web of deception and desire.

About Decision to Leave Movie

Decision to Leave (Korean: 헤어질 결심) is a Korean neo-noir romantic mystery film directed, co-written and produced by Park Chan-wook. It stars Tang Wei and Park Hae-il.

The film is produced by Moho Film and is financed and distributed by CJ Entertainment. It began principal photography in October 2020.

The film was released on 29 June 2022 on 1,374 screens. It opened in first place in the Korean box office with 114,592 admissions. On 13 July, after two weeks of release, the film surpassed one million cumulative admissions.

As of 7 January 2023, it is the tenth highest-grossing Korean film of 2022, with a gross of US$15,589,120 and 1,893,954 admissions.

Decision to Leave Release Date

Decision to Leave was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, held from May 17 to 28, 2022. It premiered at the Lumière Grand Theater on May 23, 2022, and was released theatrically in South Korea on June 29, 2022. According to CJ E&M, the film was sold to 192 countries ahead of its Cannes premiere.

In April 2022, streaming service Mubi acquired distribution rights for North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, India, and Turkey, with a theatrical release preceding its streaming debut.

The film had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022, followed by its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest the same month. It was released theatrically in the United States and the United Kingdom on October 14, 2022, and in Australia by Madman Films on October 20, 2022.

Awards & Nominations

Decision to Leave received widespread critical acclaim and was recognized as one of the top five international films of 2022 by the National Board of Review. It was selected as South Korea’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards, making it to the December shortlist.

The film earned multiple accolades, including two BAFTA Award nominations at the 76th British Academy Film Awards for Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Direction. It also secured seven wins from 13 nominations at the 43rd Blue Dragon Film Awards and three wins from seven nominations at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards.
