About Coolie Movie
In late 2019, it was reported that director Lokesh Kanagaraj had met Rajinikanth at his residence in Chennai and narrated a script that impressed the actor. Production was reportedly set to begin in April 2020, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The film was officially announced on September 11, 2023, under the tentative title Thalaivar 171, marking Rajinikanth’s 171st film as a lead actor. The official title was revealed on April 22, 2024.
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj clarified that the film would be a standalone project, separate from the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). Unlike his previous films that revolved around drugs, this film would focus on gold smuggling.
The project marks Rajinikanth’s first collaboration with Lokesh Kanagaraj and his fifth film with Sun Pictures, following Enthiran (2010), Petta (2019), Annaatthe (2021), and Jailer (2023). Lokesh and Rajinikanth would reportedly receive ₹60 crore and ₹180 crore for their remuneration respectively.
In July 2024, Nagarjuna was officially confirmed to play the antagonist in the film, marking his eighth Tamil film and his first collaboration with both Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj. Meanwhile, Sathyaraj’s involvement was confirmed in May 2024. He is set to reunite with Rajinikanth after 38 years, as they last worked together in Mr. Bharath (1986).
Malayalam actor Soubin Shahir was cast in a pivotal role, marking his Tamil film debut. Kannada actor Upendra joined the cast in August 2024, returning to Tamil cinema after Satyam (2008). The producers also confirmed Shruti Haasan’s involvement in late August 2024.
Principal photography was initially scheduled to commence on 10 June 2024, but due to pre-production delays, filming ultimately began with the first schedule on 5 July 2024 at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. The film was shot across various locations in India, including Chennai, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, and Jaipur, as well as internationally in Thailand.
The first look poster of the film was released on 28 March 2024, without any prior announcement. The teaser trailer was unveiled on 22 April 2024, revealing the film’s title. On 12 December 2024, coinciding with Rajinikanth’s birthday, a 59-second teaser featuring a glimpse of the song “Chikitu Vibe” was released.
Legal issues: Indian musician Ilaiyaraaja sent a notice to the makers for using “Vaa Vaa Pakkam Vaa” without permission, calling it a copyright violation. Rajinikanth stated it was between Ilaiyaraaja and producer Kalanithi Maran. However, critic Sathish Kumar pointed out that Ilaiyaraaja didn’t hold the song’s rights, as they were sold to Sun Pictures. The Madras High Court ruled that Ilaiyaraaja couldn’t claim exclusive ownership due to the lyrics being written by someone else.
Coolie Release Date
