About Conclave Movie
In May 2022, it was announced that Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci, and Isabella Rossellini would star in the film, directed by Edward Berger. Production began in January 2023, with additional casting revealed as filming commenced in Rome. The production also utilized Cinecittà studios, with filming concluding in March 2023.
The set design team meticulously recreated the Sistine Chapel while taking some creative liberties with the Domus Sanctae Marthae. The latter was intentionally made more prison-like to heighten the dramatic tension, as the actual version was deemed visually unremarkable.
Costume designer Lisy Christl conducted extensive research, visiting Gammarelli, Tirelli Costumi, and several museums in Rome. For the cardinals’ attire, Christl chose a red hue inspired by 17th-century vestments, finding it more visually appealing and harmonious than the modern equivalent.
Screenwriter Peter Straughan conducted thorough research while crafting the screenplay, including meeting with a cardinal to understand the logistics of the conclave. He also took a private tour of the Vatican and remarked on the institution’s openness during his visit.
Conclave Release Date
In August 2022, Black Bear Pictures’ newly established British distribution arm acquired the U.K. distribution rights to Conclave from FilmNation Entertainment, marking it as one of the company’s first acquisitions and releases in the United Kingdom. Black Bear’s distribution arm, Elevation Pictures, also secured the Canadian distribution rights. Steven Rales, through his production company Indian Paintbrush, served as an executive producer and co-financed the film.
In November 2023, Focus Features secured the U.S. distribution rights to Conclave. By July 2024, the film was selected for the Special Presentations section at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, scheduled for September 8, 2024. It was also announced as part of the lineup for the Telluride Film Festival, where it had its world premiere. The Venice Film Festival director, Alberto Barbera, explained that the film was not in competition for Venice but was invited to screen Out of Competition. He mentioned the challenges in aligning timing between Venice and Telluride, which led to the decision not to screen it at Venice.
The film’s U.S. release was scheduled for October 25, 2024, though it had originally been set for a limited theatrical release on November 1, followed by a wider opening the next week. It was slated for release in the U.K. on November 29.
