About Bimbisara Movie
Bimbisara is a Telugu fantasy action film written and directed by debutant Mallidi Vassishta and produced by Kosaraju Harikrishna under N. T. R. Arts. The film features Nandamuri Kalyan Ram in a dual role, alongside Catherine Tresa, Samyuktha Menon, Vivan Bhatena, and Prakash Raj.
In January 2020, while filming NTR: Mahanayakudu (2019), Kalyan Ram was approached by Mallidi Vassishta Reddy with the concept of a historical fantasy film. Inspired by classic Telugu fantasy films like Pathala Bhairavi (1951), Jagadeka Veeruni Katha (1961), Aditya 369 (1991), Bhairava Dweepam (1994), and Yamadonga (2007), he agreed to the project.
The film was initially launched in 2020 under the working title NKR18, marking Kalyan Ram’s 18th film as a lead actor. The cast included Catherine Tresa, Samyuktha Menon, Vennela Kishore, and Srinivasa Reddy in pivotal roles. The official title, Bimbisara, was announced in May 2021. Though named after the 5th-century BC King Bimbisara, the film does not follow historical events but incorporates elements inspired by the ruler’s character.
Originally envisioned as a standalone film, the story was later split into two parts due to its extensive narrative. However, the production of the sequel depended on the first film’s reception.
Principal photography began in 2020 but faced delays due to the second wave of COVID-19 in India. Filming resumed in mid-2021, with large sets replicating ancient Indian kingdoms constructed at Ramakrishna Studios in Hyderabad. Shooting was completed by November 2021.
Bimbisara was released theatrically on 5 August 2022, after being postponed from its initial November 2021 release due to the pandemic. A pre-release event was held in July 2022 in Hyderabad, with Kalyan Ram’s brother, Jr. NTR, as the chief guest.
The film’s worldwide theatrical rights were sold for ₹15 crores. UFO Moviez acquired the North India distribution rights, while Dil Raju distributed it in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The digital streaming rights were secured by ZEE5, where the film premiered on 21 October 2022.
In July 2022, Kalyan Ram announced plans for Bimbisara to expand into a four-part franchise, with the second installment set for a 2024 release. However, creative differences between Kalyan Ram and director Mallidi Vassishta led to Vassishta’s departure. He was replaced by VFX supervisor-turned-director Anil Paduri, who took charge of directing the film’s prequel.
