About Acharya Movie

Acharya is a Telugu action drama film written and directed by Koratala Siva. Produced by Konidela Production Company and Matinee Entertainment, the film stars Chiranjeevi in the titular role alongside Ram Charan, Pooja Hegde, Sonu Sood, and Jisshu Sengupta in supporting roles. The film features music composed by Mani Sharma, cinematography by Tirru, and editing by Naveen Nooli.

The project was officially launched on 8 October 2019, during Vijayadashami, with the working title Mega152, marking the first collaboration between Koratala Siva and Chiranjeevi. Chiranjeevi accidentally revealed the film’s title as Acharya during the audio launch of O Pitta Katha in March 2020.

The storyline is reportedly based on the Naxalite movement in Srikakulam district, led by poet and activist Subbarao Panigrahi. Initially, Trisha was cast as the female lead but exited due to creative differences, and Kajal Aggarwal was brought in as her replacement. Mahesh Babu was initially considered for a cameo, but the role was later expanded and given to Ram Charan, who plays Siddha, appearing in a significant 40-minute portion of the film. Pooja Hegde plays Neelambari opposite Charan in an extended cameo, and Regina Cassandra performed a special song. Mahesh Babu provided the film’s narration.

Principal photography began in January 2020 at Ramoji Film City. However, production was halted in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming resumed in November 2020, with Kajal Aggarwal joining in December. A 20-acre temple town set was constructed for the film. Ram Charan joined production in January 2021, with shoots taking place in Rajahmundry, Maredumilli, and Singareni coal mines, Yellandu. After a second COVID-19 wave delay, filming resumed in July 2021, and most of the shoot was completed by August, except for two songs.

In September 2021, Aggarwal, due to her pregnancy, requested an early wrap for her portions but later exited the project. In April 2022, Koratala Siva stated that her scenes were removed from the final draft as the role did not match her stature.

In August 2020, writer Rajesh Manduri accused Acharya of plagiarism, claiming the story was based on a script he had narrated to Mythri Movie Makers. However, both Matinee Entertainment and Koratala Siva denied these allegations, asserting that the script was original.

Acharya was released theatrically on 29 April 2022. Initially scheduled for release on 13 May 2021, the film was delayed due to production setbacks and the COVID-19 pandemic in India. In October 2021, the release was rescheduled to 4 February 2022 but was later pushed to 1 April 2022 due to the surge in COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant. To avoid a clash with Ram Charan’s RRR, the release was further postponed to 29 April 2022.

The satellite rights were acquired by Gemini TV, while the digital streaming rights went to Amazon Prime Video. The film premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 20 May 2022 in Telugu, along with dubbed versions in Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada. The Hindi version was later released on ZEE5.
