About 83 Movie
83 is a Hindi biographical sports drama film written and directed by Kabir Khan, based on the India national cricket team’s historic victory in the 1983 Cricket World Cup. The film is produced by Deepika Padukone, Kabir Khan, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, and Sajid Nadiadwala. The screenplay, co-written by Khan, Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan, Vasan Bala, and Sumit Arora.
It stars Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev, the captain of the team, with an ensemble cast including Padukone, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Jiiva, Saqib Saleem, and others.
The film’s journey began in mid-July 2016 when Vishnu Vardhan Induri, who owned the rights, and co-producer Madhu Mantena met with the 1983 Indian squad, including Kapil Dev, to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for the biopic. By September 2017, Reliance Entertainment co-financed the project, and Singh and Khan were officially on board.
After extensive casting and pre-production, principal photography commenced on 5 June 2019, with major shoots in England and some portions in India, wrapping up by 7 October 2019.
Originally slated for release in April 2020, the film faced multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other production challenges. It finally premiered at the Red Sea International Film Festival on 15 December 2021 and was released globally on Christmas Eve, 24 December 2021, in 2D and 3D formats. The film received widespread praise for its performances, screenplay, direction, and technical aspects but did not perform well at the Indian box office. However, it became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2021 overseas.
