About Rust Movie
In May 2020, it was announced that Alec Baldwin would produce and star in Rust, an American Western film he co-developed with writer and director Joel Souza. Other cast members include Patrick Scott McDermott, Josh Hopkins, Frances Fisher, Travis Fimmel, Jake Busey, and Devon Werkheiser.
Filming began on October 6, 2021, at New Mexico’s Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch, where numerous Western movies have been filmed, including The Man from Laramie (1955), The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1981), Silverado (1985), 3:10 to Yuma (2007), and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018). The production involved approximately 150 crew members—half of them local—as well as 22 principal and 230 background actors from New Mexico.
Production was halted on October 21, 2021, after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot and director Joel Souza was injured on set when a live round was discharged from a prop revolver being used by actor Alec Baldwin.
Following the incident, several lawsuits were filed, and both Baldwin and the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, faced manslaughter charges. Filming eventually resumed in April 2023 and was completed shortly thereafter. Gutierrez-Reed was ultimately found guilty, while Baldwin was acquitted.
Matthew Hutchins, the husband of Halyna Hutchins, became executive producer as part of a settlement following his wife’s untimely death.
Actors Brady Noon and Jensen Ackles had originally filmed scenes for Rust but both of them dropped out once production resumed due to not being able to keep up with the shoot schedules. They were replaced by Josh Hopkins and Patrick Scott McDermott.
Rust was produced on a budget of $6–7 million and has been described as a “passion project” for Baldwin. The film’s distribution rights were sold to The Avenue for $2 million during pre-production.
