Madal:

The Madal is the folk musical instrument of Nepal. Madal was first introduced by the Magar community but is equally famous and used by all of the Nepalese society. The Madal is mainly used for Nepalese folk music, which is the most popular and widely used as a drum in Nepal. Madal is made of wood its shape like a cylinder and both sides have a hole which is covered by double-layered goat-skin and a black paste made of flour. Madal is played by hand.

Arbajo:

The Arbajo is a Nepali traditional musical instrument plucked lute, long-necked and four strings. It is made of wood and similar to Nepali Sarangi. Gaine caste played Arbajo in Lamjung and Kaski district of western Nepal. Some of the few musicians still playing the Arbajo.

Bansuri (Murali):

A Basuri is traditionally made from a single hollow shaft of bamboo which has six to eight open finger holes for generating music tone. Bansuri is originating from India. Bansuri is looked like long tube small bansuris make high pitch sound and long Bansuris make a low and deep sound.

Binayo:

Binayois a traditional Kiranti musical instrument made from Malingo bamboo (one of the verities of bamboo). It is played by plucking its metal wire reed with the finger being gripped between the teeth. And mouth also played a huge role to create a better sound.

 

Damaru:

Damaru is a small two-headed drum made of wood and covered by leather. It is used in Hinduism and Tibetian Buddhism. In Hinduism, the Damaru is known as the instrument of the deity Shiva.

Panche Baja:

Panche Baja is a combination of five musical instruments which is mention below:

1. Jhyamta

Jhyamta is a Nepali traditional musical instrument. It looks similar to cymbal. Newari, Kirat and other communities use to play this instrument in their festivals and Jatras.

2. Damaha

Damaha is a drum made from leather and brass or wood. It is played by striking with a stick. It is one of the instruments included in the Panche Baaja.

3. Tyamko

Tyamko is one of the Panche Baja. It is similar to Damaha but smaller than Damaha. Tyamko is played by two thin sticks called Gajo.

4. Narshinga

The name Narsingha means “buffalo horn”, but the instrument is much larger than the horn of a buffalo. The Narsingha is a long curved natural horn with a conical bore, which varies widely in size, shape, and usage in ensembles throughout Nepal.

5. Sanai

Sanai is one of the popular Panche Baja made by metal. Its shape like pipe slightly bent forward. It has two holes, one is a small hole used for flow air and another side has a quite big hole for outflow air and produces sound.

Damphu:

A Damphu or Damfoo is a Nepali traditional instrument made of a wood circle and covered by animal skin. It is shape is a circle, made of wood and leather, and played by hand. This traditional musical instrument is used by the Tamang people to play Tamang Selo.

Dhimay (Dhimaya):

Dhimay is rather big compared to other drums played by the Newars and mostly the Jyapu community in Nepal. Dhimay is made of wood or metal and both head covers are made of goat-skin. It has a varied size diameter of 40 to 50 inches and a length of 17 to 21 inches. There are two types of Dhimay music instrument; one is smaller which are called “Dhaacha Dhimay” and one is bigger which are called “Ma Dhimay”. The Dhimay left side is played by hand and right side played by thin stick, made of cane which is normally curved at the end.

Dholak:

Dholak is a South Asian two-headed hand drum made of wood and covered with leather. It also uses in Nepal musical instruments.

Dhyangro:

The Dhyangro is a frame drum played by the Jhakri for worshiping or treating people. Dhyangro is especially used those of the Magar’s, the Kirati, the Tamang as well as by Tibetan Buddhist musicians. It is made of hollow wood by stretching goat-skin both of its edges and played with a curved stick called Gajo.

Ek Tare:

Ek Tare is a one-string musical instrument originating from Bangladesh and also use in Nepali music. It is made of dried pumpkin, wood or coconut hardcover and covered by animal skin and neck is made of bamboo. It is used for bhajan and played by Jyogi.

Irlung Pipari:

Irlung Pipari is a small musical instrument made from bamboo. It is smaller than flute.

Jhyali:

Jhyali is a traditional folk instrument from Nepal. They are thinly walled, consist of a pair of round, metal plates, resembling cymbals that are used in both folk and classical music in Nepal.

Kangling:

Khaijadi:

Sankha:

Yalamber Baja:

Yalamber Baja is the oldest Nepali traditional musical instrument that belongs Limbu community of east-Nepal. It is made of bamboo and is similar to Madal.

Sarangi:

Sarangi is a very popular Nepali folk instrument. Sarangi is especially played by Gandharva community in Nepal. Everyone felt with Sarangi sound because it sounds is so melodious. Sarangi is made from a piece of wood and the bottom is made a hollow. There is four strings are used tightly and it is played by running on a group of strings.

Dafali (Dafli):

Dafaliis a traditional musical instrument Muslim community found in all over India. It is used in puja and bhajan-kirtan and mostly played in the Tarai community in Nepal. Its shape is circular and made of metal.

Tabla:

The Tabla is a traditional musical instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent. Tabla consisting of a pair of drums, used in traditional, classical, popular and folk music.

Tungna:

The Tungna is a plucked string instrument from Nepal. It is made from a single piece of carved wood. The front hollow body (which serves as the sound-box) stretched animal skin on which the bridge sits.

Urni:

Urni is a Nepali traditional instrument. It is especially played by Dhimal Community of Eastern Himalaya. It is made of a hard-cover of the coconut and dry pumpkin by stretching leather and fastening a string with a wooden rod.

Khin:

Mahsak:

Mashak is a traditional musical instrument found in Northern India.

Pungi:

Pungi is a traditional instrument played by snake charmers. It is made of a small gourd with a mouth-blown air hole at the top and attached two reed pipes at a downside.

Daha:

Daha is a Nepali traditional instrument which is especially used in the Newari community. It is made of wood and both sides covered by animal skin.

Bhushya:

Bhushya is a Nepali traditional instrument which is especially used in the Newari community. It is made of metal. It is similar but smaller than Jhyamta.

So, here is Nepali Folk and Traditional Musical Instruments. Nepal is a rich country of culture, religions, and traditions. They have a different culture and traditional instrument. There are different verities of folk and traditional musical instrument and this is our government and our own responsibilities to protect and promote them.
