Career

Sagun Khadka was born and raised in Bode, Bhaktapur. An academically gifted student, he excelled in his studies throughout school. He completed his high school education at V.S. Niketan School and later graduated with a degree in multimedia from Islington College, Kathmandu. Currently, he is planning to pursue further studies in the United States.

From a young age, Sagun developed a deep appreciation for hip-hop, R&B, and jazz music. While studying at V.S. Niketan, he discovered rapper J. Cole and resonated with his music on a personal level. This admiration led him to explore J. Cole’s interviews, where he was particularly inspired by the artist’s approach to self-composed music.

Motivated by J. Cole’s journey, Sagun began exploring music production. Though he had no prior experience, he turned to YouTube tutorials to learn the art of beat-making. During this time, he spent countless hours on the computer, often facing criticism from his family, who mistook his dedication for excessive gaming. However, amidst gaming, he diligently honed his music production skills.

After six months of learning and experimenting, Sagun released his debut instrumental EP, Rhythm, in June 2017. Consisting of four to seven tracks, the EP received an unexpectedly positive response from listeners. Encouraged by the feedback, he was inspired to create even more beats. Remarkably, he had crafted the entire EP within a week, marking the beginning of his journey as a music producer.

After the success of his debut EP, Sagun continued to refine his craft, expanding his musical horizons by incorporating vocals into his tracks. Sometimes, he lent his own voice, while at other times, he collaborated with others or reworked existing songs with a fresh twist. Alongside his friends Saksham and Sarthak, he co-founded the Origami Music Group, a creative collective dedicated to exploring new sounds and pushing musical boundaries.

One day, while experimenting with beat-making, Sagun came across a cover of I’ll Keep You Safe by Shiloh Dynasty on YouTube. The song, originally titled Save Room by John Legend, immediately caught his attention. Inspired by its melody and mood, he decided to create a Lo-Fi version—an atmospheric style of music characterized by raw, unpolished sound elements like distortion, background noise, and a nostalgic, mellow vibe. This marked another pivotal step in his journey, as he delved deeper into the world of Lo-Fi music production.

Following the release of his music, Sagun’s work quickly gained traction online, going viral across various platforms. One day, he received an email from Apple Inc.’s Beats 1 Radio Station, requesting permission to play his song. Through this, he was introduced to Prophet, a DJ for Beats 1, who recognized Sagun’s potential and offered him a deal with Platoon—a London-based music distributor that supports independent artists. Platoon, which has worked with renowned names like Billie Eilish, Rex Orange County, and Jorja Smith, became a crucial turning point in Sagun’s career.

His partnership with Platoon—now acquired by Apple—opened doors to a global audience. His music found its way onto major streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify, where he rapidly gained millions of monthly listeners. This exposure not only expanded his fan base but also enabled him to earn royalties from his music.

Today, Sagun’s tracks have been streamed over 200 million times worldwide. His hit song I’ll Keep You Safe has amassed more than 141 million streams on Spotify alone, while I’m Drunk and Confused has surpassed 29 million streams.

Despite the digital nature of beat-making, which eliminates the need for traditional instruments, it requires a keen ear for sound selection and sampling—blending elements from existing music to craft something new. Sagun meticulously refines his work, often creating 10 versions of a track before finalizing one for release, listening to each version over 20 times to ensure perfection.

Looking ahead, he aspires to expand his musical expertise by learning traditional instruments and experimenting with different genres, including Hip-Hop, R&B, and beyond. Additionally, he hopes to collaborate with international rappers and Nepali artists such as Sajjan Raj Vaidya, Yubesh Thapa, Oasis Thapa, and more, further solidifying his place in the global music scene.
