Rosé (Blackpink)

Who is Rosé (Blackpink)?
Roseanne Park, professionally known as Rosé (Korean: 로제), is a New Zealand-born South Korean singer. Raised in Melbourne, Australia, she moved to Seoul after successfully auditioning for YG Entertainment in Sydney in 2012. Following four years of training, she debuted as a member of the globally renowned girl group BLACKPINK in August 2016.
In March 2021, Rosé launched her solo career with the release of her debut single album R, which set a record for the highest first-week sales by a Korean female soloist, selling 448,089 copies. The album’s lead single, On the Ground, propelled her to international success, making her the first artist to top the Billboard Global 200 both as a soloist and as part of a group. It also marked her as the first Korean female soloist to enter the UK Singles Chart and set a record for the most-viewed music video by a Korean soloist in its first 24 hours on YouTube.
In 2024, Rosé signed with The Black Label and Atlantic Records, releasing Apt., a collaboration with Bruno Mars and the lead single from her debut studio album Rosie. The song dominated global charts, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, South Korea’s Circle Digital Chart, and Australia’s ARIA Singles Chart, where it became the first song by a Korean female soloist to top the rankings. Apt. also earned her the distinction of being the first Korean female soloist to enter the top ten on both the US and UK charts, while Rosie became the highest-charting album by a Korean female soloist in both regions.
Throughout her career, Rosé has received numerous accolades, including five Guinness World Records, two MAMA Awards, and the Asia Artist Award for Song of the Year. She is the second-most-followed Korean individual on Instagram and has been recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the most influential living icons from Australia and New Zealand. In addition to her musical achievements, Rosé has made a significant impact in the fashion industry as a global ambassador for Yves Saint Laurent and Tiffany & Co.

Early Life & Education

Roseanne Park MBE, known by her Korean name Park Chae-young (박채영), was born on February 11, 1997, in Auckland, New Zealand, to South Korean immigrant parents. She has an older sister named Alice. In 2004, at the age of seven, Rosé and her family relocated to Melbourne, Australia. From an early age, she displayed a passion for music, learning to sing, play the guitar and piano, and performing in church choirs. She attended Kew East Primary School and later enrolled at Canterbury Girls’ Secondary College in Victoria but left before completing Year 11 after signing with South Korean record label YG Entertainment.
In 2012, at her father’s encouragement, Rosé auditioned for YG Entertainment in Sydney, despite initially believing the idea was far-fetched due to the challenges of pursuing a K-pop career from overseas. However, she surpassed 700 participants to secure the top spot in the audition. Just two months later, she signed as a trainee and moved to Seoul, South Korea, to begin her rigorous training under the label.
That same year, Rosé was given her first opportunity in the industry by featuring on labelmate G-Dragon’s song Without You from his EP One of a Kind (2012). At the time of the song’s release, her identity remained undisclosed, and she was only credited after being introduced as a member of BLACKPINK. Without You achieved notable chart success, peaking at No. 10 on South Korea’s Gaon Music Chart and No. 15 on the Billboard Korea K-pop Hot 100.
Career
Rosé trained at YG Entertainment for four years before being introduced as the final member of BLACKPINK, alongside Jisoo, Jennie, and Lisa on June 22, 2016. The group debuted on August 8, 2016, with the single album Square One, featuring the chart-topping tracks Whistle and Boombayah. In 2018, BLACKPINK expanded their global reach by signing with Interscope Records in partnership with YG Entertainment.

Rosé gained recognition beyond BLACKPINK through appearances on shows like King of Masked Singer, where her vocal performance received widespread praise. She later participated in Fantastic Duo Season 2, with producers aiming to highlight her distinct vocal style. On June 1, 2020, YG Entertainment confirmed that Rosé would debut as a solo artist following BLACKPINK’s first full-length Korean album. In December 2020, it was revealed that filming for her debut music video would begin in January 2021. A teaser for her solo debut was unveiled during Blackpink: The Show on January 31, 2021.
On March 12, 2021, Rosé released her debut single album R, setting a record for the highest first-week sales by a Korean female soloist, with 448,089 copies sold. The lead single, On the Ground, amassed 41.6 million YouTube views in 24 hours, breaking Psy’s eight-year record for the most-viewed music video by a Korean soloist within a day. The song also made history as the first by a Korean solo artist to top both the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts, earning Rosé two Guinness World Records.
On the Ground achieved commercial success, peaking at No. 4 on South Korea’s Gaon Digital Chart and No. 3 on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100. Internationally, it reached No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100—the highest chart position for a female K-pop soloist at the time—and became the first song by a female K-pop soloist to enter the UK Singles Chart at No. 43. It also secured the highest-charting position for a Korean female soloist in Canada, debuting at No. 35 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100. Rosé won six music show awards for the single, starting with her first-ever solo win on Show Champion on March 24. The music video for Gone, the album’s second single, was released on April 5, 2021, and performed well domestically and internationally, peaking at No. 6 on the Gaon Digital Chart and No. 5 on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100.
In BLACKPINK’s second studio album, Born Pink (released September 16, 2022), Rosé showcased her solo artistry with the pop-disco track Hard to Love. She also contributed as a songwriter on the album’s fourth track, Yeah Yeah Yeah.
On December 5, 2023, YG Entertainment announced that Rosé and the other BLACKPINK members had renewed their contracts for group activities, while discussions regarding their individual contracts were ongoing. Later, on December 29, YG confirmed that the members, including Rosé, had chosen not to sign individual contracts with the label.
On April 4, 2024, Rosé released Final Love Song, the theme song for the survival reality show I-Land 2: N/a. Shortly after, on June 17, The Black Label—an affiliate of YG Entertainment founded by BLACKPINK’s lead producer, Teddy—revealed they were in talks with Rosé regarding an exclusive contract. The next day, her signing with the label was confirmed. On September 26, she secured a solo deal with Atlantic Records. In 2024, she recorded a cover of Coldplay’s Viva la Vida for the trailer and finale of Apple TV+’s Pachinko Season 2.
Rosé made a major breakthrough on October 18, 2024, with Apt., a collaboration with Bruno Mars and the lead single from her debut studio album Rosie. The song was a global success, topping the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts, making it her second number-one hit on both. It also became the first song by a female K-pop soloist to reach No. 1 on Australia’s ARIA Singles Chart and topped the charts in several countries, including New Zealand. In the UK, Apt. peaked at No. 2, making Rosé the first female K-pop soloist to enter the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. In the U.S., the song debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the first time a female K-pop artist entered the top 10. Additionally, Apt. became the first song by a female K-pop artist to break into the top 10 of Billboard’s Radio Songs chart, earning Rosé another Guinness World Record. By November 2024, her soaring popularity saw her surpass 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify, setting a record for the highest number of monthly listeners by a K-pop act.
On November 22, she pre-released Number One Girl, the second single from her album, followed by a global publishing administration deal with Warner Chappell Music on November 25.
Rosé’s highly anticipated debut studio album Rosie was released on December 6, 2024, alongside its third single Toxic Till the End. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, setting a Guinness World Record for the highest-charting album by a female K-pop soloist. It also reached No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart, making her the first female K-pop soloist with a top-five album in the UK. In Australia, Rosie debuted at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart, the highest placement for a female K-pop soloist. Meanwhile, Toxic Till the End debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard Global 200 and No. 6 on the Global Excl. U.S. chart, securing Rosé her third top-ten entry on the latter.
Impact
As of October 2024, Rosé is the second most-followed Korean individual and the third most-followed K-pop idol on Instagram, with over 79.7 million followers, trailing only BLACKPINK bandmates Lisa and Jennie. Since 2018, she has consistently appeared on the Korean Business Research Institute’s female celebrity brand reputation list, ranking among the most-searched and engaged-with Korean celebrities, at times reaching the top 10.
In an October 2021 feature on the Korean Wave’s influence in music, fashion, and television, The Times described Rosé as a “queen” among the most influential figures, highlighting her evolution from a BLACKPINK member to an independent fashion powerhouse with universal appeal. Vogue praised her distinct fashion sense, noting that “even alongside her well-dressed peers, Rosé stands out.” Her association with luxury brands has been significant—her presence in Yves Saint Laurent’s Women’s Summer 21 collection showcase contributed to 27.3 million YouTube views, 11 million views on Instagram and Facebook, and 30.6 million views on Weibo within a day. The brand’s 2021 Spring/Summer collection video surpassed 100 million views after featuring Rosé. Her endorsement impact is equally powerful, with a single post of her in a black Saint Laurent dress generating a media value of $6.6 million, the highest of any endorser. Similarly, Tiffany & Co.’s Tiffany Lock campaign featuring Rosé amassed a media impact value of $1.3 million in just two days, with an additional $585,000 in value from the brand’s promotional posts about the partnership.
In December 2023, Rolling Stone AU/NZ featured Rosé in their “Icons Issue,” recognizing her as one of 50 living icons from Australia and Aotearoa who have broken boundaries and opened doors for others. They credited her with helping solidify K-pop’s presence in Western mainstream music. Weverse Magazine music critic Seo Seongdeok named her one of the “pop queens of today,” stating that “without her, the pop landscape of 2024 would have looked completely different.” He highlighted how Apt. and her debut album Rosie reflected universal emotions and relationships, transcending traditional genre labels like K-pop or American pop. This allowed Rosé to position herself as a truly global pop star while her linguistic and cultural fluency strengthened her worldwide appeal.
Beyond entertainment, Rosé has gained recognition for her advocacy efforts. U.S. First Lady Jill Biden praised her as “a global superstar using her platform as a force for good,” specifically noting her outspoken advocacy for mental health and her willingness to share her own experiences to support others.
Philanthropy
During the 2019–20 Australian bushfire crisis, Rosé used her platform to raise awareness, posting on Instagram to urge fans to support relief efforts. She provided donation links and emphasized collective action, stating, “We can make a difference if we all join in. Please help to save my home country.”
In 2023, she participated in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, speaking at a mental health awareness event in Cupertino hosted by U.S. First Lady Jill Biden. In her speech, Rosé candidly shared her personal struggles with fame and emotional well-being, advocating for mental health to be prioritized as much as physical health.
Rosé was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2024 New Year Honours for her contributions to the United Kingdom’s COP26 Presidency and her advocacy during the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. On 22 November 2023, she was formally invested into the Order by King Charles III at Buckingham Palace in a ceremony attended by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. Unlike her BLACKPINK bandmates, who received honorary MBEs, Rosé’s appointment is substantive due to her dual citizenship in New Zealand, a Commonwealth realm.
Personal Life
Rosé has been the subject of speculation regarding her personal life and relationships. Rumors of her dating actor-singer Cha Eun Woo surfaced in 2021 after they were seen at the same art exhibition and later attended Paris Fashion Week together. A viral TikTok video compiled instances of their social media posts that fans interpreted as hints of a romantic connection, though neither addressed the rumors.
In December 2024, following the release of her “Toxic Till The End” music video, Rosé was linked to actor Evan Mock due to their on-screen chemistry and a sighting together in New York City. Fans speculated about a possible romance, especially given their interactions both on and off set. Previously, she was also rumored to be involved with Kang Dong Won in early 2023, though she has remained private about her relationships.
As of 2025, Rosé confirmed her single status in a podcast interview, stating she was content with her life and questioning societal expectations regarding marriage and happiness.
