Despite her rapid rise, D’Amelio remained surprised by her popularity, describing herself as just a “normal teenager.” She gained significant recognition in October 2019 for popularizing the “Renegade” dance to K Camp’s Lottery, though she initially faced backlash for not crediting its creator, Jalaiah Harmon. Following this, she started crediting dance creators in her videos. That same year, she and her sister, Dixie, joined The Hype House, a collaborative content group.

She also introduced a nail polish collection, Coastal Craze, with Orosa Beauty. In December 2020, she released her book, Essentially Charli: The Ultimate Guide to Keeping It Real, which became a New York Times bestseller. That year, Dunkin’ Donuts introduced “The Charli,” a drink inspired by her order. She also designed fleece sweatshirts for Hollister and joined Triller amid concerns over a potential TikTok ban.
Her influence extended to the music industry, appearing in Jennifer Lopez and Maluma’s Pa’ Ti + Lonely music video and Bebe Rexha’s Baby I’m Jealous. She earned a Guinness World Record for the most TikTok followers in 2020. In November, she became the first TikTok user to reach 100 million followers and won Breakout Creator at the 10th Streamy Awards.

Public image and reception
D’Amelio is often hailed as TikTok’s biggest star. Media outlets have referred to her as the “reigning queen” and “undisputed ruler” of the platform, with The New York Times‘ Taylor Lorenz and The Washington Post‘s Travis M. Andrews emphasizing her dominant presence. Her authenticity and relatability have been key to her appeal, contributing to her widespread success. Marc Faddoul from UC Berkeley noted that D’Amelio’s status as a “median user” made her a safe choice for engagement across various audiences.
However, D’Amelio has also faced criticism for being perceived as “basic” or “cringeworthy,” a reflection of her polarizing nature in the Gen Z online world. Her rise to fame sparked memes and mixed reactions, with some expressing confusion over her popularity, while others rallied behind her with tags like #teamcharli and #unproblematicqueen. Vanity Fair referred to her as the face of “Straight TikTok,” a term for the mainstream, often heterosexual part of the platform.
In recognition of her impact, D’Amelio appeared on both the Forbes 30 Under 30 list and Fortune‘s 40 Under 40 list in 2020, becoming the youngest person on the latter. She also ranked eighth on Lyst’s 2020 Power Dressers list, recognizing her influence in fashion, and second on the Highsnobiety list of breakout cultural pioneers. In 2021, she earned a spot on Time‘s Time100 Next list and Teen Vogue‘s Young Hollywood Class of 2021.
D’Amelio’s popularity has sparked the rise of others who resemble her, including TikTokers Lisa Beverly and Ellie Zeiler.
D’Amelio Brands
In September 2022, D’Amelio and her family launched D’Amelio Brands, a company focused on fashion, beauty, and lifestyle. As co-founders, Charli, her mother, and her sister Dixie all contribute creatively to the marketing and product development of the brand. The venture secured a $6 million seed round with notable investors including Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin, entrepreneur Richard Rosenblatt, Apple Senior VP Eddy Cue, and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer.
In May 2023, D’Amelio Brands launched its footwear line, D’Amelio Footwear, which has been promoted through multiple pop-up events across the United States. In August 2023, the company received a $5 million investment from Fifth Growth Fund to expand into the food and beverage sector, bringing its valuation to $100 million. As part of this expansion, D’Amelio Brands released Be Happy Snacks, a flavored popcorn line available at Walmart stores and online. Unlike D’Amelio Footwear, which follows a direct-to-consumer model, the snack brand partners with Walmart due to its broad appeal.
Other projects under D’Amelio Brands include a skincare line, ZitsAllRight, and a merchandise line called Dam Fam Merch.
Investments
D’Amelio has participated as an investor in Step’s equity funding rounds. In March 2022, she and her family launched their own venture capital fund, 444 Capital, with Dough Renert and Jeff Beacher as partners. The $25 million fund predominantly invests in women and minority-led startups across various sectors, in early or later stages. Four investments were announced in March 2023.
Activism and philanthropy
In November 2019, after a meet-and-greet event, D’Amelio and her family donated the funds raised from ticket sales to a special needs fundraiser.
In April 2020, she contributed $50,000 to Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut to support the hospital’s staff with essential supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In December 2020, D’Amelio partnered with TikTok to donate $100,000 to the American Dance Movement, which works to provide dance education access across the United States, in observance of Giving Tuesday.
Personal Life
D’Amelio has openly shared her struggles with an eating disorder and body shaming. She has spoken about the impact of hurtful comments regarding her body shape, particularly through her involvement in a UNICEF anti-bullying campaign. She revealed that these comments were especially painful as she had dealt with body image issues, body dysmorphia, and unhealthy eating habits.
In her personal life, D’Amelio was in a relationship with social media influencer Cole Chase Hudson from December 2019 to April 2020. She later dated Landon Barker from July 2022 to February 2024.
