About Theri Movie

Theri is a Tamil action thriller film directed by Atlee and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu under the banner V Creations. Loosely inspired by the 1990 Tamil film Chatriyan and the 2013 Hollywood film Homefront, the film stars Vijay, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Amy Jackson, and Nainika.

In January 2014, Vijay expressed interest in working with Atlee after being impressed by Raja Rani (2013). Atlee, a fan of Vijay, developed the script, with Kalaipuli S. Thanu financing the project. The film was officially announced in September 2014 and was set to begin after Vijay’s Puli (2015).

By November 2014, G. V. Prakash Kumar was confirmed as the music composer, collaborating again with Vijay and Atlee. Several crew members from Raja Rani, including cinematographer George C. Williams and editor Ruben, were also brought on board. The film was described as an emotional-action thriller, with Vijay portraying a police officer and a father.

Various titles were considered, including Moondru Mugam, Vetri, Thuppaki 2, and Khakee, before finalizing Theri in November 2015. The first look was also unveiled at that time. Initially, Nayanthara was rumored to be part of the film but refuted the claims. Samantha Ruth Prabhu was later confirmed as the female lead, while Amy Jackson played a Malayalam-speaking school teacher. Veteran actress Radhika Sarathkumar was cast as Vijay’s mother, and Mahendran was chosen as the antagonist.

Filming commenced on 26 June 2015 at Kerala Club House, Chennai. The first schedule included an introductory song for Vijay, followed by scenes with Samantha. Key locations included Adityaram Studios, Binny Mills, MGM Dizzee World, and veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan’s ancestral house, Annai Illam. By November 2015, the film was 70% complete. Amy Jackson joined later, and action sequences were choreographed by Dhilip Subbarayan. Due to heavy flooding in Chennai, production was briefly disrupted.

Hollywood stunt choreographer Kaloyan Vodenicharov worked on the climax sequences. Initially planned for China, the climax was later shot in Bangkok due to weather issues. Underwater stunt sequences were filmed in January 2016, followed by a song featuring Vijay and Jackson, marking the end of principal photography.

Promotional stills were released on 15 January 2016, coinciding with Pongal. The teaser, launched on 5 February, garnered 1.5 million views in 24 hours. Promotions intensified in March 2016, with SPI Cinemas beginning pre-bookings a month ahead. The film was released in 144 screens across the United States, marking one of Vijay’s biggest international releases.

Despite initial struggles to sell satellite rights, Theri was eventually acquired by Amazon Prime Video in November 2016. The film premiered on Sun TV on 18 October 2017, coinciding with Diwali.

Legal Issues

The film faced screening issues in Chengalpet due to disputes between producers and distributors over profit-sharing. Distributors hesitated to buy the film under a Minimum-Guarantee (MG) basis, citing losses from previous big-budget Tamil films, particularly Lingaa (2014). Additionally, a raid in Chengalpet theatres followed complaints of ticket overpricing. Since the film’s release coincided with the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election period, strict enforcement of ticket price regulations led theatre owners to avoid high MG rates, fearing license suspension.

Producer K. E. Gnanavel Raja supported Kalaipuli S. Thanu’s stance, warning that films he distributed, such as 24 and Singam 3, would be boycotted in Chengalpet if the issue remained unresolved. Thanu blamed a “theatre mafia” for interfering in the business. The dispute was settled, and the film was finally screened in Chengalpet on 29 April 2016, two weeks after its initial release.

Piracy

On 15 April 2016, Vijay’s fans caught a videographer recording Theri at a Coimbatore theatre for piracy. It was revealed that the videographer, along with two accomplices, worked for the Tamil television channel Polimer TV. A pirated 90-minute version of the film was reportedly handed over to the channel. In response, the Tamil Film Producers Council and other industry associations sued the channel for piracy, though Polimer TV denied involvement.

Additionally, a bus driver named Shankar was arrested for screening pirated DVD versions of Theri and 24 on a private luxury bus. He claimed the bus owner was unaware of the illegal screenings.

Impact

Theri became one of Vijay’s most popular films, leading to repeated collaborations with director Atlee on Mersal (2017) and Bigil (2019). Atlee has referred to Theri as one of his favorite films. On its fifth anniversary, he shared a series of stills from the movie, praising the cast and crew.

The film gained popularity through multiple television reruns and achieved high viewership ratings. Its Hindi-dubbed version performed well on TV, while the Bengali-dubbed version was successful on the Bongo OTT platform. It was re-released in Tamil Nadu theatres on 21 June 2019, ahead of Vijay’s 45th birthday. Indian cricketer Ravindra Jadeja also cited Theri as his favorite film. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Tamil Nadu Police created a parody of the song “Jithu Jilladi” to promote pandemic awareness.

Remakes

The 2016 Tamil film Theri has inspired several adaptations across different languages. It was partially remade in Sinhala as Goree (2019), directed by Harsha Udakanda, and in Assamese as Ratnakar (2019), directed by Jatin Bora. Both films retained the action-thriller essence of the original while adapting it to their cultural contexts.

In Hindi, Theri was remade as Baby John (2024), directed by Kalees and starring Varun Dhawan, marking Keerthy Suresh’s Bollywood debut. Additionally, a Telugu adaptation titled Ustaad Bhagat Singh, directed by Harish Shankar and featuring Pawan Kalyan, is in production.
